Reply by Wickman on January 8, 2009 at 1:49pmI dont know about working under direct orders from SOG...Although It did happen...My Father Was MACV-SOG,says he helped coordinate some missions with USMC/Force Recon.Went out with a few FR teams. All I know is MACV-SOG worked with Marines and FR...
Dont think that helped you any though :/
Reply by Roger Muller on January 8, 2009 at 2:14pmThis is interesting information, and I think that this a perfect place for these questions. The Corps has a rich history, predating our own Nation. There is a lot to learn, so I think that as we gain information we should post it here to broaden our awareness of the small select group of Marines that helped MACV in the NAD.
Reply by gunnyred on January 8, 2009 at 10:28pmThis is something I've been trying to find out for some time myself. I've posted up before on the OLD website about how I had old Recon and Force Recon senior NCO vets teaching us younguns how to operate in the bush and some of them told stories about SOG and such. I also heard that the Corps had taken over the Phoenix Program. It's a real quiet issue. There were teams at times temporarily attached for certain missions but also attached to the SOG's Naval Advisory Group, which was mostly SEALS and PBR guys. I also hear conflicting stories from vets in different associations, some said they did this and that while others said they didn't. For example, one vet jogged my memory about reconners going out with enemy gear or equipment and another said they never did it, ssgtlou has a good pic of a team of 3rd Force guys going out the wire all dressed in black pj's and coolie hats!!! One of the closest things that the Corps had were the Civic Action Program teams, these were squads based in villages and basically did the same thing with the villagers did that the SF was doing with CIDG, go figure, SOG? Depends on how ya wanna read the book. My impression is a senior NCO (yeah DUH, no shit sherlock! lol) that has done not only a stint as an advisor, but also had some time with SOG. I based it on my experiences with my old NCO's when I was a young buck private.
Reply by Martin Bouda on January 11, 2009 at 1:09pmThis should be USMC MACV-SOG Det. patch:

I do not remember where I have found it, so I am not 100% sure if it´s real one.
Reply by gunnyred on January 11, 2009 at 4:19pmI think I've seen that somewhere!! Forgot all about it til now!!!!! Yeah, although it would have to be "unofficial" because the Corps doesn't wear patches.
Reply by Martin Bouda on January 11, 2009 at 4:22pmOf course unofficial or hooch, barracks or HQ unoff.sign. Somehow looks to me quite period, but I can not verify this for now.
Reply by Wickman on January 11, 2009 at 4:50pmive seen those before... its been awhile, but they had clear window stickers like that on ebay for awhile... never seen an actual patch or anything.
Reply by Roger Muller on January 11, 2009 at 6:46pmThe MACV-SOG logo/patch/design incorporates the anchor from the Naval Services. (Nav/Mar Det) It was a JTF, some consider it the first JSOTF. I don't think the Corps ever issued a special edition version of the logo with the EGA on it. Although, I think it does look cool. lol
Reply by gunnyred on January 12, 2009 at 8:59amyeah, I gotta agree with you on that, I don't think it was a patch either, I'm thinking the same thing, a sticker. I've been on so many site, I can't remember them all. I think I saw it before I got into re-enacting though.
